Three Questions and an apology

Postby JoshWah on Wed Apr 23, 2008 3:51 pm

1. Is there any existing video of live shows? If so, is there a video I can buy?

2. How did John and Sean tune? I'm guessing either DADGAD or open D, but I've always been curious.

3. Curiously, did you guys consciously mix harmonic sources when writing (i.e. a seeking out of a major scale melody and diatonic chords to follow a bluesy riff [m pentatonic scale, bIII or bVII chords, etc.]) to create a noticeable mode shift or was it more arbitrary than that (i.e. "make this chord on the fourth fret. It sounds cool.")?

I'm sorry for the guitar-geek questions. It isn't often that I find a forum where I can actually ask specific questions to some of my favorite musicians. :)

OK Josh...

1. There is a fair bit of video footage to wade through. Johnny has already uploaded a couple of songs to YouTube so you could start there. There are also live shows from the House of Blues Hollywood, a live set filmed in London by VH1, TV shows from New York and Texas and assorted other shows filmed at TV stations across States, and even some footage of a gig in the South France. And also an hour-long video of the making of Carnival at Rockfield Studios, Wales. There's probably other stuff too...Cor Blimey Guv as we say in Laaaandon.

2. Lots of tunings, sometimes a different one for each song, hence the need to tour with 500 guitars. But favourites include EBEEBE and EBEF#BF#.

3. The music came from the soul - we didn't really analyse it. But it'd be interesting to hear your take on it...

It's so wonderful to see some official Moke activity online again. :D

Be sure to check out the Moke vids I currently have on my youtube page. I just uploaded another today and there'll be many more to come.

Wicked - lovely to see the footage. House of Abuse, Hollywood right? It's a funny version of Slide - it must be pre-recording the second album, as the structure is different to that on Carnival.

When I get a moment, I'll going to dig out the recording of Carnival video - there's a big section of Slide being tracked on that, I seem to remember.

Yep, Alex. It is indeed the HOB Sunset Strip concert. I'm the one who originally captured this video from the HOB website back in the day and authored the DVD of it that you HOPEFULLY also have a copy of. I'd sent one to Charlie and one to Johnny quite a while ago. Did you get yours?

I did indeed get mine - thanks do much for sending the DVD. We were pretty awful at collecting any things like that. In fact, quite often, we didn't know that shows were being filmed anyway.

if anyone else has any Moke memorabilia, get in touch please!

Great! And you're very welcome, Alex. And thank YOU for the music! To this day, I count you guys as one of the best live acts I've seen. Was fortunate to see you guys twice at The Metro in Chicago. The first time I saw Moke there, I spoke with you for quite a while after the performance as we watched the next band play. You were cool as hell, Alex. :)
